Daryl is normally the one that sends out these updates, but in case you haven’t heard he is deep in the bush of Liberia with the one of the most wonderful groups of kids on the planet. Yes, since March construction has been underway on the three new buildings for the children of Balama. In March, the first two volunteers (Andrew Jarrett and Joseph Moore) took the first difficult steps of the construction project – this included interviewing contractors, arranging for equipment, laying out the site and getting a general lay of the land and the processes of dealing with the Liberian government. On Palm Sunday, Derek Roberts (our youngest brother) and Darin Hardin swapped places with Joseph and were there as the first wheelbarrows of concrete were poured for the 3 slabs necessary for the buildings to be constructed. Then in April (despite delays due to volcanoes in Iceland…) Darin returned home to Calhoun and Daryl and James Jarrett of Cartersville along with Brian Crisp of Cave Spring left just in time to meet the shipping containers with all of the building materials at the site two weeks ago tomorrow (4/27).
There is no doubt that what has happened on this little hill in Liberia in the last couple of months has been dramatic. Below are some photos showing how construction was going at the end of last week. At that time the majority of the construction of the classroom/kitchen (the largest of the 3 buildings) had been completed (pending the installation of the solar panels and electrical work). As of today, the framing for the boys’ and girls’ dorms is almost completed and they will begin installing the siding and roofing materials in the next day on these two buildings.
One of the things Orphan Aid, Liberia is most happy to announce is that not only are these children having their physical needs met thanks to your joining hearts and resources with God’s plan for these kids, but you are also participating in their spiritual growth. The second picture shown below includes Brian Crisp (the pastor of Cedar Creek Baptist Church in Cave Spring, GA), leading Bible study with a group of the children. Many of the kids had accepted Christ prior to this visit, but many more took this opportunity to make their decision to accept Christ and yesterday (5/9/10), 74 of the kids were baptized in a nearby creek by Brian. These are kids that know what it is to put your faith in God, to know that he can provide all of your needs and their lives are some of the best “preaching” I’ve ever heard. They love God and are grateful for all they have been given and would share their story with you in a heartbeat.
I also want to call your attention to the picture of the kids where they are holding up their arms. They are showing you that each of them received a bracelet that tells the story of Christ’ life, death and resurrection that were made by one of our own here in Cartersville- Thanks, Denise! For everyone else, look closely at the pictures, there is a good chance that a pair of shoes or a t-shirt that you donated is being proudly worn by one of the kids.
Thanks to all of you for your continued support through prayer and financial giving. God has chosen to show these 100+ kids to a select group of folks and we are all blessed to see His provision first hand.
